First, let me be clear. If you want to spend your snow day horizontal, watching whatever you want to watch, snacking on things you normally talk yourself out of, and calling it self-care, I am completely supportive. That is a fully valid use of a snow day and I will defend your right to it.
This is for the other mode. The one where you’re restless and the snow is pretty and you keep picking up your phone and thinking “I should really do that thing I never have time for.”
This is for the day you want to feel productive without feeling like you’re at work.
Here’s my list. Take what’s useful and leave the rest.
Clear out your phone storage. You’ve been getting that notification for six months. Today is the day.
Clean out your car. It takes twenty minutes and it will feel like a personal reset.
Go through your kids’ clothes for what doesn’t fit. Box it up for donation. Don’t let it live in a pile.
Reorganize one drawer. Just one. The junk drawer, the bathroom cabinet, wherever things go to die in your house. You will feel unreasonably accomplished.
Make the phone call you’ve been avoiding. The one you tell yourself you’ll do “when you have a quiet moment.” You have a quiet moment. It’s snowing.
Write down three things you want to do before the end of the year. Not resolutions. Not goals. Just things you want to do, for yourself, before December.
Meal plan for next week so Monday morning doesn’t happen to you.
Watch one thing you actually want to watch, not what the algorithm has been feeding you.
That’s it. No pressure to do all of it. No guilt if you do none of it.
Let me know if you’re going to try anything on the list.
